Venice

Venice is built on archipelago. The islands on which the city sits are connected by 409 bridges; the city stretches across 117 small islands and has about 150 channels.
 
Venice is divided in many districts called "Sestrieri". The main ones are Castello, Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce and San Marco, and here is where you will find the main monuments and sights. Other important districts are Lido di Venezia (where the famous Film Festival is held) and Isola Della Giudecca, while other main islands include Torcello, Burano and Murano.
 
Venice, really fabulous with its canals and gondolas, is also known as "the city of lovers". As it is virtually car free, you can walk freely around the city which is a fantastic way to discover Venice, or if you really feel romantic you can always take a trip on a gondola.
 
Places to see in Venice
 
Piazza S.Marco is located in the very heart 0f Venice. There are many things to see in and around the piazza such as the Basilica S. Marco, Palazzo Ducale(Doge's Palace), the Clock Tower and the surrounding markets.

Basilica S. Marco is one of the main attractions in Venice. It was built towards the end of the 11th Century and has been transformed several times during the centuries. It is a mixture of many architectural styles: Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic and Venetian. Inside the cathedral you can see sculptures and spectacular gold mosaics covering the basilica's entire ceiling. A wonderful church to visit, it is open all year round.
Palazzo Ducale
 
The Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) is a Gothic palace that was used as residence by the Doge of Venice and also as a government building. Dating back to the early Middle Ages, it is consider a splendid piece of Venetian Gothic style.
Rialto Bridge
 

There are only three bridges to cross over the Canal Grande: Ponte dell'AccademiaPonte degli Scalzi and the most famous Ponte di Rialto. The Canal Grande is about 4 km long and also acts as Venice's main street.

Galleria Dell'Accademia

 

The Galleria dell'Accademia is Venice's most important museum. Inside you will find amazing paintings by Tiziano, Giorgione, Longhi, Piero della Francesca and many others such as Bellini, Veronese, Tiepolo, Carpaccio, Tintoretto, Pittoni. Surely something not to be missed.

The Carnevale of Venezia usually lasts 10 days and is held in February. The atmosphere around this extraordinary events brings visitors from all over the world.  The streets are trasformed with the most incredible colours and masks. The fascination and the mystery around the mask is very intriging.

Burano
 
This colourful little village called Burano is an island just a short boat trip fromVenice. According to the tale all the houses are painted in a different color so that fisherman returning home could easily find theirs.It is a very pretty village.
Murano Canal
 
Murano is world famous for its glass making tradition. The glass making was moved from Venice to Murano to avoid the rish of burning Venice.

Basilica of St. Maria and Donato 
 
Important: please bear in mind that the Basilica of St. Maria and Donato in Murano is open in the mornings and late afternoons on weekdays and in the late afternoon on Sundays. Admission is free, but you are welcome to leave a donation.
 
How to get to Venice
 
Venice airport (Marco Polo) is located just outside the city and there are several bus services running from the airport just outside the arrival hall. The journey takes approximatly 20 minutes. Alternatively you can fly to Treviso Airport (25 km away) also main destination for Ryanair and get the bus connection to Venice.
 
By train: if you are coming to Venice from the neighbouring cities, you must stop at Venezia Santa Lucia Station and not at Venezia Mestre. If by mistake you get off there, do not worry; there are regular trains to Venezia Santa Lucia which take roughly 10 minutes.
 
Important
Please remember that if you are using the train service, you must validate your ticket before boarding the train by using the yellow machines on the platform or in the railway station.
