Sorrento lies in the northern part of the Sorrentine Peninsula just across the bay of Naples.
Sorrento, with its rocky coastline and lemon groves, is also knows as the "Land of the Mermaids" and famous for its limoncello (lemon liquor). It is very popular with tourists and can get very busy at times. Sorrento can be reached easily by ferry from Capri and Naples.

Sorrento Marina Grande
Piazza Tasso (main square)
Piazza Tasso is the heart of Sorrento. Even though it is a very busy place during the day with regular buses serving different parts of the town, in the evening it becomes a more relaxing place where you can enjoy its bars and restaurant.
Torquato Tasso (the poet)
Torquato Tasso was born in Sorrento in March 1544 and died in Rome in April 1595. The Italian poet is considered a very important poet of the late Renaissance. He is best known for his poem on the First Crusade "Gerusalemme Liberata". Unfortunately, he died just before he could be crowned poet laureate.

Via San Cesareo, a narrow street located in the "centro storico", is the perfect place for your shopping; with its many shops, cafés and restaurants you will be spoilt for choice.
Limoncello (lemon liquor)
The limoncello is a typical local liquor made from lemons; it is very refreshing and usually drank after dinner especially in the summer. One other thing you may like to try are the babas socked in limoncello: they are absolutely to die for, we just love them.
How to get to Sorrento
The nearest airport to Sorrento is Naples Airport (Capodicchino Airport -NAP). There is a bus service to Sorrento just outside the arrival gates. The airport is about 50 km (approximately 31 miles) from Sorrento.
By train: Sorrento is easily accessible from Naples Main Train Station (Napoli Centrale). You will be travelling on the Circumvesuviana Transportation System. The system covers all the towns around the Vesuvius area and Sorrentine Peninsula. Some train services have more stops than others depending on which train you board; the average journey to Sorrento is about 50 minutes to 1 hour.

Please remember that if you are using the train service, you must validate your ticket before boarding the train by using the yellow machines on the platform or in the railway station.
